Quick Answer

If you're comfortable running cables, working in roof spaces, setting up networks, and learning new software, a DIY camera system can work well.

However, most problems we see aren't caused by the cameras themselves. They're caused by poor camera placement, unreliable wireless connections, and systems that weren't designed around the customer's actual security goals.

A professional installer helps ensure the system captures the images you need, when you need them.

When customers ask whether they should install their own camera system, my answer is usually the same:

"It depends on what you want the system to achieve."

If your goal is simply to see what's happening around your property, a DIY system may be perfectly adequate.

If your goal is to identify a person, capture a vehicle registration plate, or gather footage that could be used after an incident, then system design becomes much more important.

The Biggest DIY Mistake: Camera Placement

The most common issue I see isn't poor-quality equipment.

It's cameras being installed in the wrong place.

Many people place cameras where it's easiest to mount them rather than where they're most likely to capture a useful image. The result is often footage that shows an event occurring, but doesn't provide enough detail to identify who was involved.

Good camera placement starts with understanding how people move around a property.

We look for entry points, pathways, driveways, gates, and other "choke points" where people are naturally forced into view. Positioning cameras correctly often makes a bigger difference than buying a more expensive camera.

The goal isn't just recording activity.

The goal is capturing usable evidence.

The Limits of Wireless Cameras

Wireless and battery-powered cameras have improved significantly over the last few years. They're affordable, flexible, and often a great option for locations where cabling is difficult.

However, they do have limitations.

Many rely on motion detection to trigger recording, meaning they don't always capture the entire event. Battery maintenance, Wi-Fi coverage, and signal reliability can also become challenges over time.

One of the most common requests we receive is to improve or upgrade existing wireless systems. Sometimes that means relocating cameras. Other times it means converting critical cameras to hardwired connections for greater reliability.

There's nothing wrong with wireless cameras—but it's important to understand their strengths and limitations before relying on them as your primary security solution.

What Does a Professional Installer Actually Do?

Most people assume installing cameras is simply mounting equipment and connecting cables.

The real value comes from the planning.

Before recommending equipment, we ask questions such as:

  • What are you trying to protect?

  • Where do you need clear identification?

  • How long do you want footage stored?

  • What's your budget?

  • Will you want to expand the system later?

From there, we develop a plan that considers camera placement, lighting conditions, storage requirements, network performance, privacy considerations, cybersecurity, backup power, and future scalability.

These are often the details that customers don't realise are important until after something goes wrong.

Can You Save Money Installing It Yourself?

Absolutely.

For people who are comfortable with tools, basic construction tasks, routing cables through ceiling cavities, walls and underfloor spaces, as well as networking, and technology, DIY installation can be a cost-effective option.

The biggest savings usually come from doing the installation work yourself.

The trade-off is that you're also responsible for choosing the right equipment, configuring the system correctly, troubleshooting issues, and ensuring it delivers the results you're expecting.

For some people that's easy.

For others, it's not worth the time or frustration.

The Bottom Line

A DIY camera system can be a great solution when it's planned and installed correctly.

But if security is important to you, it pays to spend time thinking about the design of the system—not just the cameras themselves.

In our experience, the difference between a good camera system and a disappointing one is rarely the equipment.

It's the planning, along with ongoing maintenance and support. Even the best camera system benefits from regular checks to ensure cameras are clean, recording correctly, storage is functioning properly, and software remains up to date. Professional installations also typically include warranty coverage and access to technical support, helping keep your system operating reliably for years to come.
