The right low light cameras work exceptionally well in the dark. The wrong ones leave you with footage that shows someone was there, but not who they were.
That difference is everything.
The Biggest Mistake People Make When Choosing CCTV
Many people shop for cameras based on megapixels, price, or camera count.
What they should be asking is: "What will I actually be able to identify at night?"
I regularly meet customers who expect a single camera to watch the entire property, identify faces, read vehicle number plates, and capture detail 20 metres away — all at once, in the dark.
No camera is magic. The further away a person is, the less detail the camera captures, and that gets harder the moment the sun goes down.
Good CCTV design isn't built around cameras. It's built around outcomes.

Seeing Someone Isn't the Same as Identifying Them
This is the most misunderstood part of night vision CCTV.
A camera might clearly show someone walking through your property — but that doesn't mean you'll be able to identify them.
For identification, a person's face needs to occupy enough of the frame for meaningful detail. In most residential and commercial setups, that means positioning cameras where people naturally pass within around 5 to 7 metres of the lens.
Distance matters. Angle matters. Available light matters.
A well-positioned mid-range camera will often outperform an expensive one mounted in the wrong spot.
Night Vision Has Changed Dramatically
If you've owned cameras before, you probably remember the old black-and-white infrared footage. For years, that was the standard.
Not anymore.
The biggest advancement in low light cameras over the last few years isn't higher resolution — it's the ability to produce clear, full-colour images in very low light.
We install Uniview's LightHunter range for exactly this reason. It pairs a large-aperture lens and BSI sensor with Uniview's own image processing to pull colour and detail out of scenes that would've been grainy black-and-white on older gear — using tiny amounts of ambient light from streetlights, moonlight, or neighbouring properties. In many cases, the footage looks remarkably close to daytime viewing.
Real Jobs, Real Results
We're currently installing a lot of these cameras across Hastings, Napier, and Central Hawke's Bay — and increasingly on rural properties too — specifically because of how well they perform at night, which is when most incidents actually happen.
One recent install for a homeowner covering the front and rear of their property had only limited ambient light from nearby streetlights to work with. Rather than the grainy black-and-white footage they expected from past experience, the low light cameras delivered clear colour images — a genuine step up in what they could actually make out on playback.
On the rural side, it's a different challenge again. No streetlights, no nearby buildings, often no exterior lighting at all. These properties are exactly where night vision CCTV earns its keep — the cameras lean on their low-light sensors and, where needed, their own supplemental illumination to keep images usable in near-total darkness.
Across the board, the difference in contrast and clarity is what makes identifying people and vehicles possible, rather than just knowing something happened.
Why One Camera Often Isn't Enough
One of the most common redesigns I do involves a customer trying to achieve two different jobs with a single camera.
A typical example: someone wants facial identification at a building entrance, and also wants to capture vehicle detail more than 20 metres away. The entrance camera nails the first job. It can't do the second — no single fixed lens realistically can.
The fix isn't a better camera. It's a second, zoom-capable camera dedicated to that longer-range job. Once both are working together, both objectives get met.
That's how good CCTV design works — every camera has one job.
A few years ago, low light cameras carried a real price premium. Today the gap is much smaller — often only around 20% more than a standard camera.
Given most incidents happen outside daylight hours, this is one of the upgrades I recommend most often. Clear identification of people and vehicles at night is where CCTV proves its value.
What Would I Install at My Own Property?
Low light cameras, every time.
The jump in night-time performance over the last few years is one of the biggest advances I've seen in this industry. For a relatively small increase in cost, you get a much better chance of capturing footage that's actually useful when it matters — not just proof something happened, but proof of who was involved.
Absolutely. The better question is whether they'll work well enough for what you actually need.
The right camera, positioned correctly, delivers excellent night-time performance and footage clear enough to identify who's on your property. The wrong camera, or the wrong design, leaves you disappointed exactly when you needed it most.
That's why choosing a CCTV system isn't really about buying cameras. It's about designing a system that delivers when the sun goes down.
