CCTV Questions to ask Installers before hiring
CCTV Questions to ask Installers before hiring

After years of installing CCTV systems and security alarms across Napier, Hastings, Havelock North, and the wider Hawke’s Bay region, I’ve noticed a pattern. Most people approach hiring a security installer the wrong way. They focus on cameras, brands, and price — when the very first question they should be asking is much more fundamental than any of that.

In this post, I want to share what I’ve learned from working with hundreds of clients across Hawke’s Bay, so you can go into any conversation with a security installer armed with the right questions.

1. Have You Actually Defined What You Need to Protect?

This is the single biggest mistake I see — and it’s not the installer’s fault. People come to me having already decided they want cameras, or they want an alarm, without first stepping back and asking: what is the most important priority in my security needs?

Is it deterrence? Evidence gathering? Immediate response? Access control? Each of those requires a very different solution. Before you speak to any security installer in Hawke’s Bay, get clear on what outcome you’re actually after.

A good installer should be asking you this question from the very first conversation. If they jump straight to showing you product catalogues, that’s a warning sign.

2. A Real Example From a Napier Security Installation

I had a client in Napier who came to me wanting cameras on the external areas of their building. On the surface, that seemed reasonable. But when I sat down with them and really understood their situation, it became clear that what they actually needed was an alarm system inside the building — one with a monitored response.

Passive external cameras might capture footage of someone approaching, but they wouldn’t stop an intruder once inside, and they certainly wouldn’t trigger an urgent response from people who could actually do something about it. What this client needed was a monitored alarm system that, when triggered, would alert a response team who could assess the situation and act immediately.

That’s a completely different solution to what they walked in asking for — and it’s one that actually matched their real risk. Ask any installer you’re considering: “how will you assess whether your recommended solution actually addresses my specific risk?”

3. What Does Your After-Sales Service and Support Look Like?

This is where I see a lot of installers fall short, and it’s something most people never think to ask about until they have a problem.

Some installers are great at physically installing hardware, but they don’t have the knowledge or the systems in place to support you afterwards. That means they can’t help you with software updates, they can’t troubleshoot when something isn’t working properly, and they can’t review your camera angles and fine-tune them to make sure you’re getting the best possible coverage. In short, they install it and disappear.

A well-established security provider in Hawke’s Bay will offer ongoing support, service calls, and the kind of follow-up that makes sure your system is actually doing its job — not just sitting there looking like it is. Ask specifically: “What happens if I call you six months after installation with a problem?”

4. What’s Covered Under Warranty, and How Do You Handle Faults?

This is the question most people never think to ask — and in my experience, it’s one of the most revealing. How an installer handles their warranty and fault response tells you almost everything you need to know about how professional they are.

A quality alarm or CCTV installer will set your system up properly from day one, which means issues are caught early rather than left to become bigger problems. They’ll have a clear process for warranty claims and will be easy to get hold of when something goes wrong. If an installer is vague about warranty terms or seems uncomfortable when you push on it, take that as a red flag.

Ask directly: “What warranty do you provide, and what’s your process if something fails in the first six months?” A confident, clear answer tells you a lot.

5. Should I Consider a DIY System Instead of a Professional Installation?

I get asked this a lot, and I’ll give you an honest answer: DIY systems can work well if you’re technically minded and the situation genuinely suits a lower-spec solution. I’m not here to oversell what people don’t need.

However, I do upgrade a lot of DIY security systems across Napier and Hastings — and the issues I see repeatedly are:

•        Battery maintenance: wireless cameras require regular battery replacement or charging, which people don’t always keep on top of

•        Signal limitations: wireless cameras need to be within a reliable signal range of the base unit or router, and gaps in coverage can leave blind spots

•        Scalability: DIY systems often can’t grow with your needs the way a professionally installed security system can

If you’re protecting a business, a commercial property, or a home with a higher risk profile, I’d strongly recommend a professional install. The cost difference is smaller than most people think, and the reliability difference is significant.

The Bottom Line

The right security system starts with the right conversation. Before you commit to any installer, make sure they’re asking you as many questions as you’re asking them. The best security providers don’t lead with products — they lead with understanding your situation.

If you’re based in Hawke’s Bay and want that kind of conversation, I’d love to hear from you. At Guardian Surveillance, every job starts with listening — because the right solution only makes sense once we understand what you actually need to protect.
